⇓ Step 1 - Pre-Enrolement - Select the course you want to do
- Think about your career and study goals
- Consider course(s) that will help you achieve those goals.
- Attend relevant course information sessions or interviews
- You may like to arrange an appointment with the TAFE Career Counsellor at your local campus.
⇓ Step 2 - Pre-enrolment - Check you meet the course entry requirement
- Entry requirements are the minimum qualifications, knowledge, skills, experience and attributes you must have to be considered for entry into a course.
- If you do not meet the entry requirements you may be eligible for other courses in this area.
- Check if there are any other external occupational registration and licensing requirements that you need to meet to work in your chosen career area with the relevant professional/licensing body.
A message for young people under 17 years of age:
From January 2010, a new law in NSW requires students to complete school to Year 10 and then to continue in either education, full-time paid employment, or a combination of these until at least the age17.
If you are under 17 years and wish to enrol at TAFE the options available to you may have been affected by this change in the law. To attend TAFE you will need to have completed year 10 or have special permission from school and TAFE to do so.
Once you have completed Year 10 you can:
- stay at school and continue into Year 11
- take up an apprenticeship or a traineeship
- enrol in a vocationalqualification at TAFE or other approved education or training.
- apply for a higher education course.
You can be in employment, as long as it is full-time, paid work. You can also do a combination of a number of these.

⇓ Step 3 - Pre-enrolment - Check that the course is being offered in a way that suits your needs and make yourself aware of the fees, course related charges and payment options
- Attendance and/or delivery details are included on the faculty course brochures, or contact the campus for more information.
- When you enrol in a TAFE course you will have to pay the TAFE NSW Fee unless you are eligible for a concession or personal exemption. Payment options are available. A small number of courses are also exempt from the TAFE NSW Fee.
- You may also be asked to pay additional course related charges. These charges cover costs associated with the course and should be paid at enrolment, unless advised otherwise by the enrolling teacher.
- Check with Centrelink whether they consider the course as eligible for payment of Youth Allowance, Austudy or Abstudy. Centrelink will consider the length of the course and your personal circumstances when deciding if you are eligible for payments. You should also remember that if the way the course is delivered changes (eg from full-time to part-time or flexible) you will need to notify Centrelink immediately as it may affect your eligibility for payments.
- Take the opportunity to consider joining your local campus Student Association. There is a small cost to become a member of the association and this can be paid when you enrol.
⇓ Step 4 - Pre-enrolment - Course vacancies
- If you only need to complete some units in a course you may be able to join an existing Semester 1 or 2 course to gain these skills.
- When joining a course during the year you need to be aware that you may not be able to finish the full course in the normal timeframe, or at the same location, or in the same attendance pattern.
- Contact the Head Teacher at the campus offering the course for more information.
⇓ Step 5 - Apply and Enrol - Courses that commenced in Semester 2, 2011
- Places may still be available in some courses.
- Contact the campus offering the course.
- Where a full course is not available, you may be able to enrol in some units of competency, if vacancies exist.
- You can also ask about alternate courses.
⇓ Step 6 - Apply and Enrol - Courses commencing in Semester 1, 2012
- Many courses within North Coast TAFE require students to complete a
North Coast TAFE Application Form (PDF). You can download this form and complete and email it to nci.courseinfo@tafensw.edu.au or print and fax/mail or deliver the form to your local campus. Applications received by 11 November will be included in the first round of student selections. Applications received after 11 November 2011 will be considered if places are available. Please note you may need to provide supporting information with your application which can be scanned and emailed to us or faxed/posted/delivered with your application.
- The information you supply on your Application Form will be used by teaching staff to select successful students for the course. You should include as much information as possible to give yourself the best opportunity to be selected in the course. You should also attach any requested evidence (such as HSC or School Certificate results).
- Some courses that do not require an application form will enrol following attendance at an information and enrolment session or by direct interview with the Head Teacher or course coordinator. You can register your interest in attending an information session by following the link on the course page.
- For some courses you can register online directly into the course and pay either when registering or at a later time to complete your enrolment.
⇓ Step 7 - Pay and finalise enrolment - Fees and other charges

If you are seeking an exemption from the TAFE NSW fee, or a concession fee you will need to phone 131601 or your local campus to complete your enrolment.

Details about the enrolment method for your course and whether you need to attend an information session or contact the Head Teacher will be shown on the course information materials available online, from your local campus or by phoning 131 601. Students may also be asked to pay additional course related charges. These charges cover costs associated with the course and you may be asked to pay these at enrolment, unless advised otherwise by the enrolling teacher. You may be able to make alternative arrangements with the Head Teacher if you are unable to pay these charges.
⇓ Step 8 - Pay and finalise enrolment - Enrolment
- For courses that require you to lodge an application, you will be advised by mail or email when to enrol.
- If your course requires you to attend an information session you may be able to enrol at the end of this session. If this is not possible, you will be advised when to enrol at this time.
- For courses where you need to contact the Head Teacher to arrange a suitable enrolment time, you need to be aware that teaching staff are on leave during normal school holiday periods.
- If you are seeking Recognition of Prior Learning for previous studies you will need to provide supporting documentation to the Course Coordinator for consideration.
- You can also choose to join your campus Student Association when you enrol.
- Please note: You are not enrolled until you have completed and signed the enrolment form (or enrolled online - where available) and paid the correct TAFE Fee or received an approved exemption.
