Partnerships for a sustainable future

A true response to ecological sustainability, whether it be within an organisation or within a community, across the nation or even globally, cannot be achieved without collaboration and partnerships.  North Coast TAFE recognises this and fosters the connections and innovation that makes these relationships work.

Primex Sustainability Partnership
For the past 3 years, North Coast TAFE has partnered with Southern Cross University and the organisers of Primex, a 3 day agricultural and lifestyle exhibition in Casino, to deliver the sustainability program for this annual event and its 60 000 visitors.

This partnership comes from a shared belief the long-term sustainability of regional communities requires primary and related industries to achieve a balance between economic, social and environmental considerations.  The sustainability program is a journey, growing from year to year, but currently featuring:
  • An exhibitor recognition program which acknowledges Best Sustainable Product Displayed and Most Sustainable Exhibit at Primex
  • Checklists for exibitors to reduce the ecological footprint of their display.
  • Exhibitor and visitor recyling scheme in partnership with Richmond Valley Council and North East Waste Forum (2010)
  • Purchase of GreenPower and actively managing out of hours energy use
  • No helium and plastic bags policy
  • Native plantings to revegetate the site
  • Waterless urinals
  • Sustainable purchasing for primted materials and publications.

Sustain Northern Rivers Collaboration
North Coast TAFE is a founding partner of Sustain Northern Rivers (SNR), a collaborative platform for action on climate change.  SNR evolved to accelerate change in Northern Rivers communities to more sustainable ways of living and working by:
  • fostering networks that stimulate innovation and action;
  • supporting regional organisations to work collaboratively;
  • pooling resources;
  • sharing learning from failures and successes

Vist www.sustainnorthernrivers.org, a website used to communicate how SNR is working in partnership with local communities and businesses, on projects to sustain the FOOD, TRANSPORT and ENERGY systems of the NSW Northern Rivers Region.

The Macleay Valley is Living Smart
North Coast TAFE is taking the acclaimed Living Smart Program to the residents in 5 communities of the Macleay Valley. Originally developed in Western Australia, Living Smart is a multi-week course providing participants with practical knowledge and skills to take action in their home and in their community.  The course covers handy hints and goal setting for saving water, gas and electricity, re-thinking transport and waste management, household chemicals, indoor air quality and biodiversity - all for healthier and happier lifestyles.  Funding from the NSW Environmental Trust and a partnership with Kempsey Council and NSW National Parks has made this opportunity possible.
North Coast businesses get 'Carbon Ready'
A price on carbon is a reality and businesses that are informed will be ready to reap the competitive advantage over others.  Thanks to the Australian Government's Enterprise Connect program North Coast TAFE has taken free 2-day TAFENSW Carbon Accoutning Training to North Coast businesses in Taree, Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour and Lismore.  If your business missed this opportunity, but is still interested, contact North Coast TAFE on 131 601 to express your interest.
