Helping build skills for sustainability

Why do we need sustainability skills? Because all jobs will have a shade of 'green'. It's a fact that sustainability is not only the business of those studying 'green' courses or working in 'green' jobs. It's an issue that impacts all of us through depletion of non-renewable resources, changing climatic conditions, unbalanced global ecosystems and increasing energy costs. Despite the gloom and doom and controversial conversations, there is opportunity in this for all of us.

Businesses that can innovate to streamline processes, cut waste, reduce resource consumption and ensure environmental protection will be ahead of the pack in meeting regulations, retaining custom, reaching new markets and prospering through challenging times. Informed individuals will be prepared for the decline of traditional work practices that are inefficient or environmentally damaging and ready to adopt new behaviours and practices that are ecologically, socially and economically responsible.

Sustainability - a part of all North Coast TAFE qualifications

To reflect the wide reach of sustainability issues, North Coast TAFE is working to embed sustainability in all courses and qualifications and generate graduates that are informed and empowered to act for a more sustainable future.  In many cases the Federal Green Skills Agreement is supporting this, with National Units of Competency focussing on sustainability, being included as core units. Where this is not the case, North Coast TAFE is working to review course design and include, wherever possible elective sustainability units.
