Harjit Kaur-Singh of Murwillumbah is on her way to realising her dream of opening her own beauty salon thanks to her hard work and the help she is receiving at Murwillumbah TAFE.
Harjit arrived in Australia in May 2009 with limited English. In 2011 she successfully completed a Certificate I and Certificate II in Spoken and Written English at Murwillumbah TAFE. The course helped Harjit develop the skills necessary to satisfy basic everyday transactional needs as well as skills in recognising numbers, doing basic arithmetic, and reading maps, graphs and shapes.
Marilyn Lowe, Head Teacher of General Education Murwillumbah TAFE said; “Harjit has achieved an amazing increase in her English language skills while studying at TAFE. In 2011 Harjit combined her English language course with a TAFE course in Health and Beauty. She is a committed and enthusiastic student who plans a career in health and beauty.”
In 2012 Harjit will be undertaking a Certificate III in Spoken and Written English at Murwillumbah TAFE. This course offers skills in writing a range of texts for work, further study and personal purposes, including formal correspondence, form filling, reports, job-seeking documents and discussion. It also includes skills to carry out multiple-step calculations and measurements, interpret texts representing space, develop graphical representations of data and calculate area and volume.
Harjit said; “Studying at TAFE is much more than learning English, I have met many people at TAFE and made a lot of good friends. The teachers have helped me with not just English but they have given me the skills and confidence I require to pursue a career as a beautician.”
