Over 550 people gathered to celebrate outstanding achievement at the North Coast TAFE, Ballina, Casino Lismore and Wollongbar Campuses Awards of Excellence held last week at the Lismore Workers Club.

The awards are for the 2011 academic year with 92 students nominated based on academic results, class or campus participation, whether they are a great team player or have great leadership skills.

Elizabeth McGregor, Director of North Coast TAFE said what a magnificent event and the awards showcased a huge range of talented students.

“I’m extremely proud of the achievements of the students, congratulations to all the nominees and the winners.” said Ms McGregor.

The major award Student of the Year went to Trent Gasnier who studied Certificate III in Horticulture at the Wollongbar Campus.

Trent Gasnier said “I’m really honoured to receive this award, it feels great.”

“I was really surprised when they call out my name but it’s good to have all the hard work recognised.”

“I’d like to thank all the team at Wollongbar, they were terrific and in particular I’d like to thank my teacher Garry Coleman who supported me all the way through.”

Trent currently works for Rock on Landscaping and said his boss was pretty happy to hear about his award.

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year: Brenda Davison - Certificate III in Events

  • Arts and Media Award of Excellence: Rodney Black - Certificate IV in Screen and Media

  • Business Awards of Excellence: Jennah Saville - Diploma of Business Administration

  • Community Services and Health Award of Excellence:  Emma Hommen - Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled/Division 2 Nursing)

  • Construction and Transport Award of Excellence: Tyrone Preston - Certificate III in Automotive Mechanical Technology

  • General Education Award of Excellence: Stephen Deng - Certificate I in Access to Work and Training and Certificate III in Spoken and Written English

  • Information Technology Award of Excellence: Jack Herington - Diploma of Information Technology (Networking)

  • Manufacturing and Engineering Award of Excellence: Lincoln Crane - Certificate III Electrotechnology Electrician

  • Primary Industries and Natural Resources Award of Excellence: Trent Gasnier - Certificate III in Horticulture

  • Tourism Hospitality Award of Excellence: Nadia De Jong George - Certificate III in Hospitality (Commercial Cookery)
