The majority of Australia's inhabitants live along its enormous coastline and there are diverse employment opportunites across a wide range of industries in and around the ocean. The marine studies course will provide you with a broad range of skills to work in this environment. You will gain knowledge of marine organisms, the environment and water quality, practical skills in identifying marine plants & animals, researching marine habitats, seamanship, aquarium maintenance, presenting tour commentaries and first aid. Some of your career options may include deckhand/ research assistant/eco tourism guide on dive, charter, research, fishing or environmental monitoring vessels or on shore based operations.
The Marine studies program is delivered as a Certificate III in Transport & Distribution, Maritime Operations. This course is from the National Maritime Training package and has been chosen as it allows you to complete the core units required to work on a commercial vessel, with the flexibility to study a variety of marine related units from other training packages. Completion of the core maritime units will give you credit (roughly 1/3 of the course) in the Certificate II Transport & Distribution, Coastal Maritime Operations - Coxswain
Completion of the marine studies program also includes the following:
- General Purpose Deckhand - you must apply direct to NSW Maritime for this qualification after completing the required units during the course
- Workcover approved First Aid training
