Studying with us

Natfish courses are delivered by a mix of distance education and practical workshop blocks. Most of your learning is done at home using either printed course notes or internet learning materials depending on the course you are enrolled in. The flexible delivery format allows you to study fulltime or part time to suit your needs.

The teachers are available to help you by phone, email, or you can drop in to Natfish for help with your study. There are extra support materials for most courses online as well and North Coast TAFE provides a wide range of student support services such as counselling, library, careers and disability support.

Workshops

The practical component of the courses are covered at workshop blocks. The workshops are a compulsory part of the courses and at them you will learn practical techniques, go on field trips and complete practical and written assessments. The workshops are timetabled so that you attend a block covering the requirements for several units to save you travelling too often. All the aquaculture and some of the marine studies workshops are held at Natfish, Trenayr campus. The recreational fishing workshops are based at Maclean campus (with most of the workshop spent out fishing). The maritime units workshop block in the marine studies courses is run at the specialist maritime centre at Ballina TAFE.

Morning and afternoon tea is provided at Natfish, but you have to provide your own lunch. Natfish is 10km from town and has no canteen so you are encouraged to bring lunch with you rather than leave the campus in the short lunch break. Facilities include student kitchen with microwave, fridge, freezer and a BBQ. Similarly Maclean campus has no canteen so Recreational fishing students will have to make their own lunch arrangements.

Cost

You will find individual course costs on the course flyers on the Course areas pages. Cost comprise of the following;

NSW TAFE Fee - This is a set fee based on the qualification level and can be paid by semester. You may be eligible for a concession or exemption if you are receiving government benefits.

Coutres Related Charge - The Course Related Charge covers your learning materials, morning and afternoon teas during workshops, some field trips costs and other resources you require at the workshops, or will require to complete assessments at home. The charge is different for each course and is reviewed each year. Again the current fees are listed on each course flyer.  The Course Related Charge should be paid at enrolment to ensure you receive your learning materials on time.

Student Association membership - We recommend that all students join the Student Association. The association provides many services to Natfish students, including BBQ lunches and pizza days for members at some workshops, discounts with many retail outlets around the state and is constantly improving student facilities on the campus providing things like outdoor furniture and much more.

Other costs - You will need to pay for your own travel to and from workshops, accomodation whilst attending workshops and for your lunches during workshops. This is likely to be your major cost in completing your course.

Most certificate level and diploma courses are Austudy and Abstudy approved.
