Aboriginal health

The Vibe Australia website covers a range of different issues for Indigenous Australians. The Vibe Health section has a nationwide list of Aboriginal Medical Services.

Adolescent mental mealth

ReachOut is an information and referral service for young people. There are lots of fact sheets as well as ideas for dealing with problems. Also has contacts and phone numbers for emergencies.

Somazone is an Australian website developed by young people for young people. Somazone provides fast, free, anonymous access to quality-assured health information.

Headspace - Australia's National Youth Mental Health Association site provides youth going through difficult times with useful information on mental health where to get help in their local community and what to expect when they go for help. The site also has stories from other young people and a carer's page and a 'Knowledge Centre' that contains a list of downloadable factsheets about a range of mental-health related issues including suicide and self harm.

General health issues

NSW Health site has an index of common health topics. It also contains a NSW Health Services Directory to all health services in NSW (including community health centres).

HealthInsite is an Australian Government initiative. Through this site you will find a wide range of up-to-date and quality assessed information on important health topics such as diabetes, cancer, mental health and asthma.

Drug and alcohol

Information on drugs and alcohol is available from The Australian Drug Foundation. It is an independent, non profit organisation working to reduce alcohol and drug problems in the Australian community.

Counselling Online is a service where you can communicate with a professional counsellor about an alcohol or drug related concern, using text-interaction. This service is free for anyone seeking help with their own drug use or the drug use of a family member, relative or friend. Counselling Online is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, across Australia.

dontgetused is a website for young people with information and resources about drugs and drug use.

Mental health

Anxiety Online is a comprehensive online mental health service offering information, assessment, online diagnosis and treatment programs ("eTherapy") for various anxiety disorders.

The Black Dog Institute provides information about mood disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder. It includes information about how to get help self-assessment tools and factsheets research and a media centre.

Beyondblue contains many resources on dealing with depression.

BluePages is produced by the Centre for Mental Health Research and contains many resources on dealing with depression.

depressionServices.org.au is a service portal that offers a diverse range of interactive human services, including free counselling and peer support, utilising online technologies for Australians living with depression to help improve their mental health and wellbeing.

MoodGYM training program
This site is available free of charge to the public, and delivers cognitive behaviour training to prevent and decrease depressive symptoms in users.

e-couch personal self-help program
This site is available free of charge to the public, and provides evidence-based information about emotional problems (including depression and anxiety disorders) and teaches users strategies for preventing them.

MoodSwings is a free online self-help program for people with bipolar disorder.

Virtual Clinic provides free Internet-based education and treatment programs for people with anxiety and depressive disorders who cannot readily access face to face treatment. It is a not-for-profit initiative of the Clinical Research Unit for Anxiety and Depression (CRUfAD) at St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney, and the School of Psychiatry, University of New South Wales.

SANE Australia is a national charity helping people seriously affected by mental illness through research, education and campaigning. Their website has lots of useful information. Internet Mental Health is an encyclopedia of mental health information, with details of mental health disorders, diagnosis, treatments, and research.

The Eating Disorders Association (Qld) has useful information on anorexia and bulimia.

Multicultural mental health

The Transcultural Mental Health Centre (TMHC) provides clinical consultation and assessment services for individuals and families from culturally and linguistically diverse communities with mental health issues, co-existing conditions such as a mental health condition and substance abuse issue or problem gambling.

Multicultural Mental Health Australia (MMHA) provides national leadership in building greater awareness of mental health and suicide prevention amongst Australians from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

The NSW Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors (STARTTS) helps refugees recover from their experiences and build a new life in Australia. Services include counselling, group therapy, group activities and outings, camps for children and young people, English classes and physiotherapy.

Sexuality counselling service

This is a community-based organisation providing telephone counselling to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people as well as their family and friends. For more information go to their web site.

Suicide prevention

The Living Is For Everyone (LIFE) website is an excellent suicide and self-harm prevention resource.

The Salvos also offer suicide prevention and bereavement support.
