Some campuses now have a bookshop open for limited hours where you can obtain textbooks and other learning materials. EFTPOS facilities are offered in some locations. This facility may be extended in the future.

Canteen and Student Common Room
Each campus provides a student common area to relax in outside of class hours. Most campuses also have a canteen, tea and coffee-making facilities, microwave ovens and food and drink vending machines.

North Coast TAFE offers a number of support services to assist people with disabilities. Services for Deaf and Hearing Impaired Students
Anne Hay and Bronwyn Watson work as Consultants for Deaf and Hearing Impaired Students in the North Coast Institute. Their office is located at Lismore Campus, Conway Street, Lismore 2480.
Anne travels to all North Coast TAFE campuses between Tweed and Taree, when there are students who need assistance with their course because of deafness or hearing impairment. Anne can arrange note takers, signing interpreters, tutorial assistance, and the loan of equipment, eg FM sets for deaf and hearing impaired students.

Exemption from TAFE NSW fee
If you are receiving Government benefits you may be eligible for one personal exemption from the TAFE NSW fee each calendar year. You apply for the exemption when you enrol and need to bring proof of benefit, such as a current Austudy card, Pensioner Concession card or correspondence from Centrelink (within one month).

Financial Assistance
Financial assistance is provided by Centrelink for eligible students studying full and part-time. Full-time students must be formally enrolled in an approved course and studying at least 75 per cent of a normal full-time workload. This includes Youth Allowance , Austudy and Abstudy Payments, Rent Assistance, and Pensioner Education Supplement (PES).
Flexible Learning
North Coast Institute utilises a range of learning strategies in addition to classroom work. These may be workplace learning and assessment, self-paced or computer-based learning, weekend sessions, individual, peer-support or group learning, projects or learning contracts or tutorials and lectures. You can work with teachers to find the study modes that suit your lifestyle and commitments. A Flexible Learning Handbook is available at your local campus.
Harassment Contact Officer
All North Coast Institute students are entitled to be treated fairly and learn in an environment free of harassment. If you feel you have been harassed or discriminated against you can talk to a Harassment Contact Officer at your campus.
Security
Each campus employs security officers or contracts a security firm to provide security patrols, to ensure a safe and secure student and staff environment.
Student Associations
Student Associations are run by students for students and are a great way to get involved in campus activities, social and sporting events. Many campus Student Associations provide a range of support services such as vending machines, photocopiers, recreational facilities, and accommodation assistance.
You can join your local Student Association for $20 for a full year, or $10 for the second half of the year. As a member you get student rates on TAFE NSW activities and services such as bookshops, and discounts listed in the Student Association Discount Guide. Student Association Officers
All campuses have a Student Associations Officer. Their role is to find out what facilities, services and activities are needed by the students, to run the Student Associations and to advise students of their rights and responsibilities.

Student Rights and Responsibilities
North Coast Institute aims to provide a learning environment that is free of discrimination and harassment. There are policies on Complaints, Occupational Health and Safety and Discrimination.
TAFEcard
The TAFEcard is a student identification card and a stored value card. It displays your photograph, name and student number. You use it for identification on campus and in final examinations, for registration on the TAFE NSW library network, for membership of your student association, access to parking and secure areas such as computer laboratories and for eligible student travel and other concessions. It also contains a reloadable ‘electronic purse’ and works at TELSTRA payphones. The TAFEcard also allows you to receive discounts on a range of goods and services. Find out more about the TAFEcard.
Travel concessions
Free travel is available to full-time students under 18 years of age studying more than 20 hours a week over at least four days, and who do not work. Your campus must be at least 3.2 kilometres from your home and must be the nearest campus running your course. You may also be entitled to travel concessions if you are an apprentice in your first or second year. You can get application forms for travel concessions from your campus. International students are not entitled to travel concessions.
Tutorial Support
You can get help with English, English as a second language, reading, writing, maths, science, computing and communication for any North Coast Institute course you are studying. Tutorial support is available at our Individual Learning Centres, Adult Study Centres, Adult Basic Education Centres and at all North Coast Institute campuses.
