What is TVET?

TAFE Delivered Vocational Education and Training (TVET) courses offer senior secondary school students the opportunity to study for TAFE NSW qualifications as part of their regular Higher School Certificate study program. These courses are a great way to build your career in a range of industries.

The benefits of doing a TVET Course include:

  • having a broader choice of study options
  • gaining practical skills and training for the workplace
  • TVET qualifications are recognised by employers Australia wide
  • having the opportunity to gain two sets of credentials - one from the Board of Studies (HSC) and one from TAFE NSW.
  • Advanced Standing which means there is no need to repeat any subjects successfully completed if you continue with TAFE NSW after school
  • learning in an adult learning environment

TVET courses are usually held at the local North Coast Institute campus and delivered by qualified TAFE NSW teachers. In some cases students are taught by TAFE NSW teachers using other facilities.

All TVET courses count towards the HSC however, only Accounting or the Industry Curriculum Framework courses may count towards your ATAR. There is an optional HSC Exam for Industry Curriculum Framework courses if you have done 240 hours of study.

Industry Curriculum Framework TVET Courses have a mandatory work placement component and you will be required to undertake this to successfully complete the course.

TVET courses have the same Board of Studies requirements as other HSC courses. You will need to attend class and complete the set assessments.

How is TVET different from school?

The TAFE NSW environment is an adult learning environment and we encourage learners to take responsibility for their learning with support and guidance from teachers. This is great preparation for work and/or study after school.
